Healing in Motion: How Kristy Found Strength After Breast Cancer

At Club Pilates, we believe movement has the power to heal not just the body, but the mind and spirit as well. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as we stand alongside the American Cancer Society, we are honored to share the story of Kristy Bibbey, a member of Club Pilates Old Town, whose journey through cancer and into recovery is a powerful reminder of strength, resilience, and the role mindful movement can play in healing.

Life Changing Diagnosis

Just over two years ago, Kristy, a former Division I athlete who had always prioritized her health, received the unexpected news that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

“I thought I was the picture of health,” she recalls.

Her treatment plan was intensive: chemotherapy, immunotherapy, surgery, and radiation. Like many survivors, Kristy emerged from treatment not only needing to rebuild physically, but also searching for a safe and sustainable way to reconnect with her body after everything it had endured.

Movement that Made a Difference

In the year since joining, Pilates has helped Kristy restore her strength in ways she never anticipated. The practice has improved her flexibility, core strength, and balance all of which were critical as she navigated the long road of post-treatment recovery. Pilates also became a therapeutic tool, helping her manage the lasting effects of treatment.

“Pilates is critical for maintaining bone density,” Kristy explains, as she continues on hormone therapy; a treatment known to decrease bone density over time.

In addition, she found that Pilates offered relief for radiation-induced muscular fibrosis, providing benefits similar to physical therapy in a more engaging, empowering environment.

Renewed Lifestyle

Today, Kristy continues her journey with a renewed sense of purpose. Her story is a testament to how, even after the most difficult chapters, there is always a way forward and often, that way begins with a single breath, a single step, or a single class.

For Kristy, Club Pilates has offered more than just physical benefits. It has provided her with something just as vital: a welcoming and inclusive community. Walking into a studio that embraces members at every stage of life and fitness helped her feel supported, safe, and seen. And as she continues to build strength and resilience, she’s found a place where she can continue to grow not just as a survivor, but as a woman reclaiming her power through movement!
