Pilates on Vacation

One of the most challenging times to maintain a good fitness regime is during the vacation season.

With all of the hustle and bustle of planning, organizing, visiting with friends and family, or simply needing to decompress, there doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day.  Here are some simple tips for staying healthy and moving while embracing your vacation state of mind.

A lot of people think that they need a gym or equipment to fit in a workout.  Step outside and find an activity that allows you to embrace your environment while creating the much-needed motion that your body craves.  Planning a scuba diving trip, kayaking, or skiing are all great options for the avid mover.  Another simple option is hiking or even walking along a beach or a trail.  Regardless, getting outside and enjoying nature revives the body by supplying fresh air, getting some vitamin D sunshine, and providing an escape from your everyday routine.  All of this combined with the benefits of movement encapsulates the perfect way to stay healthy while on vacation.

No matter what you choose to do, involve your Pilates principles.

Joseph Pilates strived to convey his practice as not just a workout, but as a way of living.  Keeping good posture and alignment throughout all activities can create a healthy workout for the entire mind and body.

When getting outdoors isn’t feasible and you are confined by four walls, opt for the simple solace of a mat workout.

Challenge yourself with basic Pilates exercises that move your body in all ranges of motion, strengthens your underused muscles, lengthens your overused muscles, and bring overall balance to your entire body.  You can complete all of these exercises in a very short period of time or even opt to complete all thirty-four of Joseph Pilates exercises for a more classical style of fitness.  Ask your Pilates instructor about exercises that you can do, and even consider booking a private session with your Pilates professional to assign exercises specific to your goals.  Allowing yourself that small amount of time to rejuvenate your mind and body will prevent you from feeling sluggish and lethargic when trying to relax.

When a busy schedule on vacation takes over any free time to work out, concentrating on making your daily movements a Pilates practice is a simple way to ensure a healthy body.  Pilates principles including proper spinal alignment, use of breath to move more efficiently, and activation of abdominals and core muscles while functioning throughout your every day promotes better posture, fewer aches, and pains, and allows the body to move with less effort and more balance.  While these concepts are absolutely necessary during Pilates exercises, they were also designed to translate into the efforts of your everyday life.  Practicing good posture while sitting on an airplane, while standing in lines at theme parks, and even throwing in some good morning or evening stretches can stimulate more mind-body connection and more efficient movements.

Challenge yourself to maintain Pilates principles even during hectic schedules, and your body will thank you for it!

Planning activities that require movement, adding on Pilates mat exercises and stretches, and being mindful of maintaining spinal alignment and correct muscle activation during vacation is simply healthy living. Do Pilates to feel better, move better and live better. Do Pilates. Do Life.
