Niki was diagnosed with MS at age 33, and it impacted her gait and balance, requiring her to use a walker to stay mobile. Despite these challenges, Niki remained determined, staying active and fit even after her diagnosis. However, an injury to her sacroiliac joint led to chronic pain that interfered with her daily life and mobility. Determined to not let MS or her injury hold her back, Niki recalls telling herself, “You have not given up all these years; don’t give up now. You got this.”
At 56, she set out to find a workout that would help her rebuild strength, balance, and coordination while staying mindful of her physical needs.
“Pilates is a perfect match for me,” she says, grateful to have found Club Pilates Trinity nearby. Her journey began with Deborah Myers, her instructor, whom she describes as “an angel sent from heaven. Words cannot explain her optimism, professionalism, and dedication to helping others.” Niki practices with Deborah three times a week—each session tailored to her ability on that particular day. Deborah shares, “Niki’s progress is inspiring because it’s built on persistence and self-compassion. Every session looks different depending on her energy and mobility, but she brings the same determination and positivity each time.”
Since beginning Pilates, Niki has completed 287 private sessions, and the physical and emotional benefits have been life-changing. “I have a better understanding of my body movements,” she shares, noting that her strength gains have prevented the falls so common with MS.
She credits Pilates with easing her MS symptoms, such as muscle tightness and spasms, and emphasizes her goal to “stay mobile” rather than aim for unrealistic expectations.
But Niki’s journey is about more than her personal progress—it’s about the inspiration and motivation she brings to everyone around her. She is truly a cheerleader for our members, lifting others up and embodying resilience through her example. Although she doesn’t attend group classes, her presence motivates our community to keep moving and embrace every day. Her message is clear: “Yes, I CAN—never, never give up. Do not give up on something you believe in, and that is yourself.”
Niki’s impact has even brought more individuals with MS into our studio, as her journey demonstrates what is possible. She has helped create a supportive, encouraging atmosphere where everyone feels motivated to pursue their wellness goals, no matter how challenging they may seem. “Pilates has helped me feel normal, like I am able to do what others can do,” she says. Her favorite reminder to herself and others? “You never know how strong you are until being strong is your only choice.”
